Starting A New Adventure!

So, after sending out a few queries for Monica's Modern Magic, I decided to start a new book. It's an idea I've had rattling around for a little while and figured now was as good a time to start as any.

"Betwixt: A World Between Worlds" will be a young adult adventure fantasy story about a girl who gets transported to a strange new world and must try to find her way back home.

Here's the background concept:

Many ages ago, an advanced race developed interdimensional travel. The first world they discovered with their new technology, came to be seen as a hub dimension. For from it, and only it, could they then travel to many other worlds. Because travel to the connected dimensions all necessitated a visit to the first, it came to be called Betwixt, the world between worlds.

Explorers by nature, the ancient race made great and frequent use of their new technology, venturing from their home to Betwixt and then to the many other worlds it connected to. Over time, they discovered an unusual anomaly that occurred each time something or someone came to or left Betwixt. It was a previously unknown principal of their dimensional travel technology, a sort of law that imposed balance between the worlds. When something came to Betwixt from one dimension, something of equivalent mass was ejected from it, sent seemingly at random to one of the other dimensions. The same held true for when something left Betwixt. Something else from one of the other worlds would end up getting taken to the hub world.

Even after this strange law of equivalency was discovered, the advanced race paid it little mind. After all, much of the time, all that was displaced were bits of rock, occasionally a few plants, and on a select few cases, animals. But as the technology was used over many centuries, becoming a staple for the race who's curiosity seemed insatiable, Betwixt became populated by the flora and fauna of all the worlds it was connected to. Many creatures could not survive the sudden shift from their homeworlds to this entirely new ecosystem and would perish quickly. But some, either vicious enough or clever enough, managed to make a home of Betwixt.

Some of these life forms were considered intelligent, even by the interdimensional being's standards. As attention was brought to the displaceds' plight, sympathy for them grew. Being a magnanimous people, the ancient race's use of interdimensional travel became highly regulated and, in time, was stopped entirely. Because of the randomized nature of the laws governing travel between dimensions, the race would be unable to return the displaced species. And so, with little option, they left them to fend for themselves the best they could.

Hundred of years later, modern teen, Alexandria 'Alex' Jones, finds herself mysteriously displaced in Betwixt with no idea how she got there. Now she must try to survive in this strange new world so she might find her way home.
